Beyond Meat burger at Vincent vegan(Berlin)
Updated: May 8, 2019
The first time I learned about the Beyond Meat project was on the "How I built this" podcast with Guy Raz, where he interviewed Ethan Brown, founder and CEO of Beyond Meat.
Ethan describes how he grew up with animals on the farmlands of the United-States and was looking for a way to reduce the environmental impact of live agriculture on our planet, a massive problem indeed.
After years of working in the clean fuel industry, Ethan decided to go and take his dream to the next step, raised money from family and friends, rented an old hospital building and in 2009 started Beyond Meat.
Today Beyond Meat is one of the leading companies in the meat-substitutes industry and are backed by names such as Bil Gates and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone.
Only recently they hit the stock market under the name "BYND" at an initial offering size of $100 million.
The company says net revenue for the nine months ending September 29, 2018, was $56.4 million, a 167% increase from the same period a year earlier.
The global market for meat substitutes is forecast to grow steadily, from an estimated $4.6 billion in 2018 to $6.4 billion by 2023, according to recent predictions.
The expansion owes to rising health concerns, including obesity and diabetes, due to the consumption of meat products.
Meat substitute companies, like Beyond Meat, Morningstar Farms and Impossible Foods, are benefiting from growing concern over animal welfare and the environmental impact of factory farming.
After some background let's get to the point.
I tried the Beyond Meat burger at "Vincent Vegan" in Berlin, a vegan burger Joint that after an extended survey decided to begin and market the Beyond Meat Burger at their branches despite, and may be due to his high price(in comparison with other vegan burger patties, including their own).
I want to state that I am not an enthusiast of meat/dairy-substitutes and I genuinely believe that vegan food can be appetising, individual and exciting without having the necessity to imitate any flavours, scents or appearances of other dishes.
After that said, I will say that I was amazed when I took the first bite from the Beyond Meat burger. It was delicious and distinct from any other vegan burger I have tasted before, in a good way.
The patty is really "meaty" and delivers the right taste and texture as one.
I wouldn't go too far by saying it is exactly like a genuine burger and you can give it to any carnivore, and he would not tell them apart, he must certainly will, but so what?
The Beyond Meat patty in combination with the Brioche bun, fresh veggies and BBQ sauce did excellent work, and I enjoyed that burger very much and most definitely eat it again when the opportunity arises.
In conclusion, if you are a long time vegan/vegetarian, forgot the taste, texture and smell of meat by now and was a fan of the genre before, you should eat the Beyond Meat burger, you will not be disappointed.
I am looking forward to more innovations such as the Beyond Meat, and I encourage anyone to go ahead and try them, even if just for the off-beat experience and culinary variety.
